(Colorado) Senate approves emergency contraception bill

DENVER - The Senate gave initial approval Monday to a measure that would require hospitals to tell rape victims about emergency contraceptives.

The measure, which faces a third reading before it heads to the House, drew objections that it would force some church-affiliated hospitals to violate polices that are grounded in religious beliefs.

Sen. Betty Boyd, D-Lakewood, said her bill (Senate Bill 60) would exempt individuals who have moral or religious objections, but those exemptions would not apply to the hospitals where they work ...

4. The concept that medical care should be based at ALL on religious beliefs

is nauseating...

5. It's very unfortunate but,

in my community the only hospital is a catholic one. It is common knowledge in our town that the police will not take rape victims there but to state run hospital about 5 miles away, precisely because of the above reason.

In addition, I have known many pregnant women who refused to have their children at this hospital because they wanted their tubes tied afterward. Again, this catholic hospital won't do that either.

We fought the buyout of this hospital to the church, but to no avail.

7. That's completely screwed up -- a hospital needs to offer MEDICAL

treatment, not dogma.

We have a hospital in my city run by the Catholic Church, but I have never heard of anything like this out of them. I'll have to ask my husband, he's lived here longer.

8. I hear you

Mr. Laurel knows that if I'm ever incapacitated and need medical attention, he is to take me to the non-religious medical facility in town and not the Catholic one. I refuse to let someone else's dogma take precedence over my health.

I couldn't imagine being in a community where there is no such choice.
