1. Allison is delightful. |

The haters desperately need a good asskicking, one of those asskickings that are a crossing of the cognitive Rubicon.

2. I read the Josh Whedon piece at Salon last week. |

I'm glad to see men writing about this. It makes me realize that some (maybe most) of them actually get it.

3. You're more optomistic than I am.... |

I think it's a fairly small number of men who truly get it. But I do believe that it will be those the get it that can turn the others around.

But, fortunately for me, I'm married to one of the ones who gets it.

5. I read this thread yesterday and cringed. |
|
I am a former track athlete myself, and I have raised a couple with similar talent. I love the sport, and I have watched with great interest as women have literally raised the bar in the very young women's pole vault competition.
Because of my love of the game, I view the participants as athletes first and seldom look beyond that. When I read about the lewd comments being showered on this gifted vaulter, I was very much saddened.
Although my "enlightment" with regard to women's issues has been a slow process, courtesy of my highly successful and very patient wife, I am left totally stumped by the issue introduced by this thread. What potential solutions exist for her? Anyone who watches much television has witnessed the parade of attractive female tennis stars who have embraced their "sex appeal" and turned it into product endorsements. Needless to say, that isn't for everyone and may not be an option at all for such a young athlete in a relatively new sport.
Short of lawsuits, legislation, and/or mandatory castration, what might fix this?

6. Do you remember the young woman at the |
|
University of Colorado who made the football team as a field goal kicker and what happened to her?
I met her years after her experience on the team. She became a spokeswoman. I wish I could remember her name. A little bit of googling would probably turn up her name and a picture. She was a stunningly beautiful woman....long blonde hair, tall, the whole nine yards.
She was harassed beyond all extremes....eventually one of her 'teammates' raped her. She dropped out of school and told no one. Eventually she knew she had to bring the Truth to light. So she tells her story. She eventually returned to college (not Colorado...I think somewhere in AZ) and is in the record books....only woman to kick a field goal (or it could have been a point after) on a college team.
She said that the Coach set the stage for her abuse....and the team members followed his behavior. He's the asshole that started that Men's Religious Revival crap...I can't remember what they call themselves...but they had big revivals in stadiums. He was a f*cking pervert.
I think part of the solution is for the Good People to stand up and call the Assholes, Assholes. That takes a ton of courage. And I believe the Good Men need to police their own. Our culture seems to put all its attention on the woman...and I believe the attention needs to be on 'the boys who will be boys.' That is a pathetic excuse for rape...yet our culture buys it hook, line and sinker.
It's all about education and raising the consciousness of people. I know that sometimes you gotta use a 2 by 4 to get some of these folks' attention...but treating women only as sexual objects is beneath humanity...animals behave better.
There's the lacrosse team of D'Anza College in San Jose....a horrid recent story that I simply can't put my brain around...who will stand up for that 17 year-old woman? Some days it's too much to bear....the absolute cruelty of men.
Sorry for rambling....time to get some sleep.

The kicker -- Katie Hnida. Rick Neuheisel invited her to walk on, she accepted and then he took off for the pros, leaving her in new coach Gary Barnett's hands.
The group to which you're referring is the Promise Keepers.
You don't have to convince me that football is a cesspool of horrid human behavior.
But, your comments are well taken. Only men can solve this.
