1. Alert is your friend. Let the Mod's do their job (Which they do quite well!) |
|
Let those threads die an ingnomious death, never to be seen again.

It's something I considered starting, actually.
I've learned a lot from reading those threads in other forums, and in some cases I modified my behavior because there were some things I didn't realize were triggers or sore points. I found those threads to be a nonthreatening way to eavesdrop on those conversations quietly without obnoxiously dominating them as an outsider who is defensive or clueless, or exposing my own stupidity. :)
I don't know if it's better to have a thread like that here, or in the feminist forum.
If it were here, the upside is that anyone can post to it, regardless of donation status. The downside is that we'd get some of our usual asshats who are here to disrupt and hear themselves spout inanities, without the forum restriction that they have to agree with a certain set of principles in order to contribute.
(I wish DU had a happy medium, where you had to abide by certain principles to post in some forums, without donation status being a restriction.)

...I created it after a particularly horrible weekend on DU. Seriously. I was not happy and was starting to question my presence and participation here. That was my way of venting.
At the time, I had no idea anyone would respond to it. I certainly didn't think anyone would add to it and that it would grow. I didn't think it would inspire or influence anyone.
I sometimes wondered about it, and felt weird about some of the "energy" around it. Most of the time, links are placed there in anger, frustration and pain. Though, some are also linked in a spirit of "this is so completely ridiculous, it's funny." And sure, I've laughed at many of the threads there.
Right around the time, I was considering asking for it to be locked, so it would drift to the archives, I was contacted by a few that have silently lurked and read from it, and apparently learned something in the process. Not my intent when creating it, but a definite plus to it's existence.

3. Well, 100+ views, but only four votes |
|
And those split evenly. I guess I got my answer.

...my concern with such a thread being created in women's rights would be that the "usual suspects" could make it problematic.
The forum where I originally did that, was quiet and doesn't have much of a disruptive presence. Disruptors are few and far between and dealt with efficiently by the moderators. Though everyone there doesn't always agree, when members do disagree with one another it's rare and s done in a respectful manner. So in that sense, it was a safe place for such a thing. I guess in a weird way it was sort of a bonding force, too. lol.
I'll be honest, in that I never imagined people would respond to it they way they did.
I would sincerely love to see such a thing done for women's issues. I really would. But I don't know how it would function in an open forum like this one.

this is the more-frequented space. Doing this in the group would be safer, yes. Maybe I should post this poll there, rather than just the link to here...

...and it makes sense from that standpoint. I do apologize. I didn't mean to put down your choice in any way.

 right back, and thank you. I know you meant no insult; it does make sense for a "Best of DU...?" thread to be placed somewhere safe(ish). I haven't noticed trolls on the GLBT thread, but then again, trolls stay out of the GLBT group.
And may I take this opportunity to thank you for the original idea in the first place? I personally have learned a lot from your original thread.

9. The GLBT forum gets it's share of trolls |
|
They just haven't gone into the "best of..." thread.
