I thought maybe some folks might want a supportive group if they are getting down to the end of their rope. My husband is going through Hep C treatment and can't work like he usually does. I've been applying for jobs, but since I've been self-employed since 1987, most of my former bosses are dead. I still have a lot to sell, so I probably won't end up out of my house. But I do know it is going to be tough to make ends meet and I don't know what each month will bring since I don't know how my clients are doing either.
So I read here and there on DU that this one or that one has lost their job or losing their unemployment. I thought we should have one place where anybody who is really going through that fear and dread could get some support and ideas.
Having been down this path back in the 80s, the worst mistake is to wait too long to get help so maybe we can help people to take the steps before they're in crisis.

In really tough times I put several part-time jobs together into a survival package. I delivered a couple of local free weeklies to vend boxes, sold ads for one of them, and wrote free lance for a couple of magazines. It was a roller coaster but it got me through.

Those are the kinds of things people don't think about, delivering free weeklies and the like. Of course, I couldn't give water to someone dying of thirst, they'd just walk right past my pretty clean glass and go over and put their face in a 2 inch puddle. But some of the regional free ads might need someone.
I'm sure I'll be fine, I just don't want other people feeling like they're alone. I've been homeless before, with kids, and it is the most terrifying feeling. Trying to prevent it is terrifying too, because you can't figure out which way to turn for sure. Then the people who already are homeless are going to fall even further down the list in terms of getting help. It's going to be a tough year.
