At rehearsal tonight, they use marshmallows for the "eggs" in a particular scene. The kids all kept grabbing all the marshmallows and eating them. My kids weren't, of course.
Some of the other kids were giving my kids a hard time about why they wouldn't eat them. I told a couple - "hey - next time you're on the internet - why don't you look up what gelatin is actually made from . . . "
"Gelatin?"
"Uh-huh - Marshmallows are made of gelatin - like jello is and a lot of other things. You should look it up. Really. You might be surprised to find out what you're actually eating."
Was that really really bad of me????

You didn't go for shock value and you didn't stretch the truth. You just suggested they look it up, which wasn't a bad thing. We live in a culture where people don't pay nearly enough attention to what they eat, encouraging kids to pay more attention to what's in thier food can't be a bad thing.
Anyhow, if you had said something to discourage them from eating flesh or cow's milk the other parents might get pissy about it, but I doubt anybody'd be terribly upset if thier kid decided not to eat marshmallows anymore.

After all, you only said what you did after the other kids gave your kids a hard time for not eating the marshmallows. I'm sure you wouldn't have said a thing if they hadn't been snotty to begin with.

People need to learn what's in their food, kids included. Maybe a few will actually look it up & then tell their parents what it is. My experience is most people are appalled when they discover what gelatin is, although I don't understand why it is more replusive to them than animal flesh.
