| An Inconvenient Truth - no mention of the meat link? |
|
Just got back from seeing Gore's movie, which was very well done, and I have only one complaint. Though he mentions in passing how a huge portion of the planet's CO2 emissions come from the burning of rainforest for grazing land, nothing is ever mentioned that eating less meat could help stop global warming. Switching to CF bulbs, sure. Plant a tree - of course! Buy green energy if you can or green tags if you can't....but not a word is said about going veg or even just eating LESS meat.
Bah.
It's still something everyone should see, though.

I think that the fact that eating lower on the food chain is better for the environment is still a radical idea in this country. (Just look how well the idea is received on this "liberal" site.)
Glad to hear that the film was good, though.

| 2. He may have been afraid that acknowledging that |
|
would cause too much backlash. Asking people to change some light bulbs, buy a hybrid car when they get their next one, reduce/reuse/recycle, etc. are not met with much resistance. However as you well know from threads here at DU even hinting that they even reduce the amount of meat they consume (never mind eliminate it entirely) result in such a tirade that any other message gets lost in the melee. He may have decided to leave out the benefits of going veg*n so the rest of his message would be heard.

| 3. I agree. If he said that, it would have thrown some of his target.... |

...audiance into neural-shock. Hence, the rest of his message would have been lost.

I'll never be in politics! :)
Seen from that perspective, it was rather brilliantly handled, then. He puts the info out there about forest clearing pretty dramatically, but leaves it to the viewer to realize (or not) what the economic force behind that destruction is.

| 5. The purpose of the film is to convince people that global warming exists |
|
I think Gore's movie's main goal is just to make the public understand for once and for all that global warming is indeed happening. There are still huge numbers of people who won't believe it.
A film version of Fast Food Nation is coming out soon. That film might make many people think twice about ordering their next burger.

| 6. I love Al Gore for his expansive mind.... |
|
but the fact as shown in the movie that his family farm raised cattle, and judging his slight roundness, I am just musing he probably partakes of burgers and steaks on a regular basis.
He probably doesn't balance that portion of the equation.
