| Which dog breeds have YOU been bitten by? |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 07:01 AM by SemiCharmedQuark
For me, a beagle, a husky, a yorkie, a min pin, a lab, a mutt, a newfie, a bloodhound and various inbred dogs down south when I visit my family. I have handled hundreds of dogs and not ONCE have I ever been bitten by anything that could be classified as a "pit bull" and in every instance where I WAS bitten, the owner was squarely to blame. Either the dog was essentially wild, or the owner did not hold the dog right.

|
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 07:40 AM by laheina
was by a slightly unhinged toy poodle/schnauzer mix.
I was sitting on the floor playing a board game with the owner, and the dog attacked me from behind--and drew blood.
Apparently, it had a history.
on edit: I forgot to add that all of the biting incidents that I can think of involved little dogs, whereas I'm usually around medium and large dogs (pitts included), none of which bite.

| 2. I've been bitten twice |
|
First time, I was on my paper route. Ex/retired police dog (German Shepherd). Lived next door to one of my route customers. Never leashed, no fence (an ex/retired cop "owned" her. He was a total dick, too. She actually ran across the street to bite me. Wasn't too bad, as I was more scared than hurt.
Second time, my fault. Breaking up a dog fight between my eldest dog (13, lab/chow-ish mix) and one of the rescues. Left hand. Still have the scars. Hurt like hell.
Oh, and a chihuahua nipped my finger once. Of all the breeds, that one seems to have the biggest variant. Some are the nicest, sweetest dogs, but some are nothing but psychotic little tasmanian devils with funny haircuts.

| 3. Bitten twice - years ago by my landlady's Daschund! |
|
Then my Lab/Shepherd mix, but she was in pain and thrashing around.
Long story. She was jumping off the back of the pick up truck and somehow slid and caught her paw in the hinge of the door. She was suspended in mid-air with her leg hyperextended and stuck. I had to yell for help and some neighbors came running. While I was trying to keep her still as they worked her foot out of the hinge. She thrashed around and bit me!
The pit bulls and rotties I have known have all been sweethearts.

It was a very strange dog. Very hyper. Uncontrollable. You couldn't trust him. Scary as hell really. And yeah, I got bit more than once by this dog.

Several times when I was little (about 3 or 4) - older neighbor boys used to sic their dog on me - they were lovely people. :eyes: It unfortunately instilled a bit of a lifelong fear of large dogs I'm not familiar with, but I'm trying to get over it. Still I remain much more of a cat person, even though I do love dogs.

| 7. Pit-rottie mix (yeah, whoever bred him was a rocket scientist for sure) |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 12:17 PM by LeftyMom
It was the afternoon of the 4th of July, and he was out in the front yard while I was talking to one of the two-legged members of his family. Somebody up the street set off a string of firecrackers, the dog was startled and he bit my hand. I only got a few scratches (I don't even have a scar,) I think in mid-lunge he decided I wasn't what made the big scary noise because he just sat there on the sidewalk looking confused (which he was good at, both he and thier other dog mentioned downthread belonged on the short bus) until his person started yelling and took him inside. I had my hand cleaned up and bandaged, my Dad got assurances from the dog's adult caregivers that he had current shots and would not be out in the front yard off a leash anymore and that was the end of it.
For a while after that I was a bit scared around dogs (our family's boxer had died not long beforehand so I didn't have one at home to counter that bad experience) but I encountered so many wonderful dogs of all breeds that it was hard not to warm to them again.
As an aside, the two nastiest dogs I've ever known and the only two large dogs I've ever disliked were both kept by that family. The one that bit me was known to kill cats and the other chased kids a lot, although I don't recall that he ever bit one. Still, the combination of shitty breeding, poor socialization (the dogs spent the vast majority of thier days chained in the back yard, I never once saw them walked) and bone-stupid people makes bad things happen, I'm just glad it wasn't anything worse.

I was 5 years old and didn't heed the warning of the owner to wait until she had hold of the dog before approaching her. I wanted to see the puppies. Mom took a nice chunk out of my thigh.
That's about it for me. I learned my lesson early.

When I was about five, our neighbors said their German Shepherd had just had puppies and if I wanted to see them, I could go and look under their trailer. So of course I ran out there and was kneeling down and oohing and ahhing over the puppies. All of a sudden I heard something that sounded like an angry bear right by my ear. I whipped my head around and all I saw was the momma dog's flashing teeth. She bit me on the face. Scared me to death, and I still have a little scar, but it could have been MUCH worse. I don't blame the dog, though. These days people sue for that kind of thing. Back then it was just an accident.
Oh, I recently was bitten when I intervened in a dog fight. I don't know which dog bit me. I knew it would happen, but was alone and had no other way to break up the fight. I blame myself for that one, obviously.

trying to protect my dog from another dog that was going after my dog. Both times I got bitten on the arm. When I was a kid it was not too serious. That was just a smaller mixed breed. The more recent bite was a Rottie, and I had to have stitches. She really got her teeth into my lower arm. As it turned out she had a brain tumor and passed away shortly afterward.

|
Both when I was a kid.
The setter was just a nip, really, and it was as he was entering a house full of dogs. Too much excitement, and I probably didn't know enough to get out of the way.
The Lab was worse--I was little, and sledding with some other kids. The dog came bounding along and grabbed me by the head. Fortunately, his grip wasn't that good and I had some momentum as I had just started down the hill, so I just ended up with a torn scalp. Still, no fun on the slopes.

I was snapped at by my grandmother's bull dog (when I was around 8) but I asked for it. I'd been warned half a dozen times not to put my face close to the dog's and I did it so the dog snapped at me. I never did it again.

Caught me on my bike and bit my ankle. A true "ankle-biter!" :)
My uncle was a dairy farmer when I was a kid. He had pit bulls, or pit bull types. I was never fearful of them, and loved everyone. None of them had a mean bone in their bodies. They were a hearty group, always getting snake bit, or jumping out of the truck bed at the wrong time. They loved the farm life and we loved them. We had Rock, then Lil Rock, then Lil Lil Rock...so we weren't the most imaginative with names....haha

Hmmm....I find that hard to believe, and suspect it was posted to bait me. Beagles are rarely dog or human aggressive (which is why I live with my second one now). They are easily cowed, and about as tenacious as a wash cloth.
But I'll bite, you should pardon the pun...why did a beagle bite your dog?

He was an unneutered, mostly untrained male beagle who did not like "strange" dogs. He was fine with people and the other dog in their house, but he didn't like other dogs. He was loose and attacked our German Shepherd.

All dogs are different, even within breeds. I was caretaker once for five German Shepherds (all intact), even though they all lived in the same house, they all had very different personalities.
Apollo (older male) loved the females, hated Jiggy, dominant with people, but not aggressive. Jiggy (male) loved everyone and everything. Truly happy-go-lucky dog despite being nearly starved to death by a previous owner, hence his name. Girly (female) scared of everything but non-aggressive. Andra (female, mother of Meeka) good all-around dog. Protective, but not aggressive. Meeka (female) good with dominant people, all male dogs and extremely submissive females (needed to be kept separate from her mother).
Hell, growing up I had a Pit Shepherd mix that only showed random signs of aggression towards old men in red coats. This wasn't severe aggression, but rather just growling and raising of the hackles, but listened to a verbal command to stand down. She was completely non-aggressive towards other people, kids, cats, dogs etc.

little bundles of cuddleness whose owners are responsible if they attack.
So, one can generalize about pit bulls--it's always the owner's fault--but not about beagles. Got it! Thanks!

restrained their beagle, if wouldn't have attacked my German Shepherd, much like most Pit Bull attacks result from people not properly restraining their dog. If they allow their dog out unleashed or in a yard with a fence that cannot contain the dog, then the OWNER IS RESPONSIBLE. I blame the owner for allowing their beagle to run loose. Our dog was tethered up in the yard (which we did not do without supervision...we were outside with the dog) and the beagle ran into our yard and went after our restrained German Shepherd. That is the owner's fault, more than the beagle's fault. Plus these people never trained the dog at all (it wouldn't sit, stay, come etc) or socialized it with dogs outside of their home.
Also, while I did point out the variations in personality among the different German Shepherds, every single one of those dogs was well-trained and a good trustworthy dog. I wouldn't have considered any of those dangerous and they were all properly restrained at all times. The backyard had a dig-proof 6' fence. Huge difference than simply letting a dog run unleashed.
