Saying he was "taken aback" by the defendant's "cavalier attitude," Lake County Associate Judge Joseph Waldeck sentenced James Kelly Bartlett to 12 months of probation Thursday for mortally wounding a neighbor's dog.
Waldeck said Bartlett's actions were unbelievable "in light of the statements you made about your own dog, saying how important your own dog was to you."
In addition to probation, Bartlett was sentenced to perform 200 hours of public service to an organization benefiting animals, and fined $250 -- to be paid to the dog's owner.
Waldeck also said Bartlett would receive 150 days in Lake County Jail if he does not successfully complete probation.
