| Question re: "veganic gardening" |
|
Edited on Sat May-08-10 10:10 PM by K8-EEE
Hey all!
I make my own compost from kitchen scraps, leaves, and horse poop from my friend's backyard (she has a stable in her back yard.)
My vegan friend who is starting a garden is not sure if she wants to use the compost as it contains "an animal product." Product? IMO, a "product" is a commercial thing; this is poop from a stable that I get for free!
What say you vegans? Is there something "anti-animal" about making compost with animal poop??? I say no! I just don't get what's wrong with it. The horses are pets & on an all-veggie/grain diet.

| 1. As a Level 8000 liberationist vegan, I say your friend is nuts. |
|
I'd chalk this one up to +11 militancy with not clue about agriculture.
And if she gets all uppity, ask her about her car. You know, the paint and tires...totally not vegan.

| 3. Personally, I'd use the compost. |
|
I would not use bagged, commercial poo because:
1. sale of it is contributing to the profitability of animal exploitation and
2. because of all the drugs, weird feed, etc commercial food animals get I'd be very concerned about what exactly was in it.
However, neither of those reasons apply to a genuinely free waste product from a companion animal. I can't figure out any situation were composting horse poo does any injury to the horse, but of course using waste and keeping it out of landfills promotes the welfare of all animals, human or non, in a general way.

I forwarded her your messages. She has thought about it & will use the compost. She's not "nuts" or anything I did not want to portray it that way, just as a passionate vegan she thinks about everything she uses. I'm a non-vegan but I really respect that! She has really opened my eyes to factory farming etc. and changed a lot of the things I buy so we are both learning from each other. It's all good!
Thanks again!
