The shakedown period, or Macbook with the blues.... |
|
I bought my Macbook on the 27th of June, and it went in for major surgery yesterday morning. The Superdrive had stopped functioning on Sunday, and as I was sitting at the Genius bar with it, it refused to reboot and died on the table. So the logic board and the superdrive are being replaced.
It's the normal shakedown period, I know - if a machine is going to die, it's going to be in the first six weeks. But oh, this is sucking.
So just as a reminder: Electronics are most likely to have major failures in the first 60 days of ownership. Be prepared and mindful of that, and realize that if there is a major failure, it's most likely to be related to an error in manufacturing than it is to anything else, and errors in manufacturing happen.

2. We had to send one of our workplace's MacBooks back for repair too |

Similar thing -- it stopped booting. It's been waiting for parts in an Apple Service Center for 10 days now, so I'm assuming it's probably getting a new motherboard.
In contrast, I got a MacBook Pro 2-3 months ago, and it's been entirely trouble free (so far).

4. Funny... we had massive problems with our Powerbooks, but |
|
our iBooks never gave us a moment's grief. DH's original PB was in the shop 6 times in the first six months he had it, and eventually they lemoned it out and he got a replacement that was fine... until about two years later when the bottom of the case separated from the circuit board underneath.
My PB was having problems of its own... wear and tear mostly, but still, wear and tear.
It was probably just a manufacturing error. There seem to have been a run of them that had problems of this nature. Hopefully quality control is all over it.
