Who likes their big storage device? |
|
With the new baby we're taking a whooooole lot of photos, and we're getting panicky about all of them sitting un-backed-up on the iMac.
Can anyone recommend a huge external storage they've had good luck with, with Time Machine?

1. Sparkly has a 1T La Cie on her iMac. It came highly rated. It works fine. |
|
I have two 1T Seagates in my MacPro. One is strictly for Time Machine. It works perfectly.
I'm guessing an drive works perfectly ...... until it breaks.
All reviews say La Cie is best.

I've had great luck with it, and it was a fantastic price. Not sure if that's big enough for you

is to back up to removable media regularly. (DVD 4.7 gigs of data). Even external drives can fail. I lost 2500 pics from a fantastic cruise. Sure they were on an external drive, but I failed to put them on a DVD for archive. Gone.

DVD's may deteriorate, but if they're put away somewhere and not used, they last a LOT longer than a hard drive.
The only issue is with backups you update a lot, but for situations like yours, it's perfect

7. I have a 2TB Western Digital firewire drive that I bought two years ago. |
|
I was temped by the cheap price.
The 800 speed firewire works fine with my old 17-inch G4 PowerBook.
It does not work in 800 mode with my new 17-inch Intel MacBook Pro, only in USB and firewire 400.
Western Digital says this is a known issue, they won't update or replace my drive, and tough shit.
Don't buy a Western Digital drive.
I used to get all my drives from otherworldcomputing.com.
I have gone back to them after this one crapola drive.
They make the best external drives for Macs, period.

8. Don't blame WD for Job's errors |
|
Basically the WD works better with your G4 because of how it was engineered.
It works less good because jobs is making macs with cheaper parts, thus your lower speed issue.
Try not to be too harsh on the drive maker. They did they best when they made it.
