getting rid of old iPhone? |
|
Hi ... i have a question about old iPhones.
I have an older model, I think it's the 2G 8GB version. It works well except for one bizarre problem: it can detect public wifi signals but refuses to connect to it. But it has no problems connecting to my airport wireless at home. I've tried everything I can think of to fix the problem. I cannot "forget" the network because it does not give me that option. I've tried resetting the network, resetting the entire phone to factory settings ... several times. I don't think the software & firmware upgrade is causing the problem because this problem started before i did the upgrade. (I was hoping the upgrade would fix the problem!)
Therefore, I'm considering upgrading the phone itself to a 3GS for $200. I'd rather not do it because, except for the annoying public wifi issue, this old phone works fine. I heard about a legitimate company called freeiphoneswap.com that buys old iphones. They make changes to the hardware so people in other countries without the formal Apple configuration can use the phone on other networks. Unfortunately, that link loads a completely different website. However, there seems to be an active ebay market for used phones.
I guess I have two questions:
1) does anyone know of a fix to the public wifi connection problems? If I can get that fixed, I'll keep the phone. 2) is there a domestic market for old iPhones? I'd rather donate it; the hardware itself would be free, but the AT&T plan is pretty expensive.

2. I sold two iPhones (1st gen - metal back) on Ebay last month for $200 each |
|
so there is a market for them - the buyer was in Thailand and had a long history on ebay, I would not sell to people that are out of the country unless they have a long positive history. That being said I have seen some sold for more state side. I saw one sell last week state side for $230.
