I need help in GD... "Only 7% of market so not big enuf for viruses." BS. |
|
I know this old saw has been around since ULTIMA3, but I know that passowrd protection and the UNIX platform are much more resistant to viruses than DOS. I just don't know the ins and outs of the whole thing and what makes Macs more resistant to hacks. Could use some technical help. This is the Windoze users version of Death Panels argument on Macs, and I want it to stop right fracking now. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6379527&mesg_id=6379527

too small to be bothered with. Not true of course, and the old mac os was really crap about security.
The newer one is much better but your old war horse won't be able to run even the powerPC version of OSX unless you like lag.
Your best bet is to google AV and Mac. I don't know if Avast (what I prefer) is available for the Mac, but it's worth a look. Theres also Panda OS, as well as, I think, Norton.
Basically you want a suite, one that include av that scans your drive, all incoming files, emails, and files that come in over IM, as well as a firewall to protect your system from hackers.
Also you want to make sure you have at least a router using NAT and a basic firewall - these are hardware solution that usually don't actually require configuration beyond connecting to your internet source, often you don't even have to do that much. WAN goes to your internet box, LAN goes to your computer.
I generally like Linksys, but that's me.
Anyway I hope that helps a little bit.
luck.
