Topic : Cannot install Snow Leopard over 10.5.8 because "can't boot from" boot disk |
|
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2130966&start=0&tstart=0See the hint from William Maxwell on page 3: For all affected users: Please open Disk Utility > Highlight the boot HD > click on the partition tab. Just move the partition size a bit and return to original value. Then hit apply. Then see if the install works

1. Clarification: This is a bug that apparently affects only a small number of users in particular |

circumstances. I found it because I'm looking in advance for potential rEFIt problems. The hint is not to change the partition table, but to "tickle" it without changing it. Backup first, of course!

2. Isn't the term "blessing"? |

3. There may be more than one issue here. This problem appears to affect some people |
|
with a very small extra partition from other software. It might affect some rEFIt users but not only rEFIt users. I'm not sure yet whether I'd be affected, since my extra operating systems are all on separate disks. It's my unprofessional and uninformed impression that this trick involves somehow zeroing out some or all of the partition table and then recreating it anew without any allocation changes. I remember blessing my rEFIt, but IIRC that does something different: it's marking rEFIt as a start-up item; I don't know what that affects, but my first guess wouldn't be the partition table, since System Preferences normally allows me to choose any disk as the startup disk. It's certainly seems possible to me that after a SL install, rEFIt wouldn't work without re-blessing -- but I don't really know much about this

4. It's been a very long time since I've had to do such a thing. |

I spent the whole day trying to get my HP printer to work. It's working now.
