Anybody successfully install the Eclipse Mercurial Plugin in Eclipse in OSX 10.6

without borking the OSX Software Update?

I installed Eclipse with the C/C++ IDE, then installed the Mercurial plugin, but on restarting Eclipse I learned that a later version of hg was needed. So I look at hg and its date is from my original OSX installation a few years back. So naturally I update it to the latest version and restart Eclipse without error. Then I think WTF! why would I need hg? And the only idea have is that it might be used for Software Update. I check: sure enough! Software Update doesn't work. So I restore everything to the way it was before I installed the plugin

So how do I get the plugin to work?
