How do I get my iTunes apps and media on to my new Mac?

The Mac shows up in iTunes, but there doesn't seem to be any way to transfer anything over. You can only see what's there already. Drag and drop returns an error.

1. When I got my last Mac, it had a program that made everything really simple.

I just connected the two machines and the program asked me what I wanted to transfer over. My entire iTunes library moved over easily.

It went without a hitch.

5. Migration Assistant. It rocks, especially through firewire. Time Machine works too.

I just got a little Macbook Air with Solid State drive (love it) but no firewire so I had to use an external hard drive and Time Machine.

But from macbook pro to iMac or whatever, Migration Assistant moves EVERYTHING over to the new machine, passwords, history, bookmarks, applications.

It's freakin magic!

2. In OS X there is a program called Migration Assistant.

It will be in your Utilities folder.

Launch it and follow the directions.

If you plan to get rid of your old computer (or, not use iTunes on it at all) you should deauthorize your iTunes library on it.

This frees up one use of your library on another computer. (I think you only get the ability to install your iTunes library on 5 different computers, so it is important to do if you want to retain your ability to install it on multiple computers in the future.)

3. The first time I started up my new MacBook Pro, it asked me if I wanted

to transfer the contents of my old Mac via Time Machine.

(The sales person at my local Mac Monger's place told me about it.)

4. You still have your old machine?

Make a time machine back up on an external drive... and then just follow the instructions to set the new machine using the back up.

I have had to do that twice, when one of my drives died and when I upgraded the drive. It works like a charm. In fact. before we go on a trip... time machine will be done
