Hey Southerners!

Californian here, but since I have y'all together thought I'd say hi.

Something about Southern Progressives just stands out. Because they are in the minority where they live, they fight harder and with more zeal than their blue state counterparts. John Edwards, Molly Ivins, Ann Richards, Al Gore and Jimmy Carter all stand out in my mind.

Out here in Blue America, we take progressives for granted, whereas the Southern Progressives know a fellow progressives is a gem indeed.

So hat's off to y'all (and I seriously hope you don't mind me appropriating the contraction...)

It takes a certain desperate sense of humor down here, but it is a glorious thing, in its way, to be a progressive in the south. For my part, I get to annoy the shit out of my in-laws.

Oh, more kudos on spelling "y'all" correctly, but you should know that it's actually the singular form, the plural being "all y'all". :D

6. Damn straight, Taverner! One must be tough to be a progressive in Dixie,

and not just tough, but sly as well. Someday we'll get our fellow Southerners straightened out about which party is the good guys and which party is lying through its collective teeth.

All y'all out there on the west coast are welcome here down south anytime. We need your help and your support. The south is not a massive red area. We are actually quite purple for the most part. By the way, your state is so beautiful. I have friends who live up in Mendocino County in the redwoods with a view of the ocean. I've driven from LA up to Mendocino (and back) on the coastal highway on two occasions. What a journey!

I did encounter many people who had never been to the south and who had misconceptions about us southerners. They were very nice people who had been influenced by a Dukes of Hazzard - Deliverance - Bubba image of our region. Perhaps we need a a progressive west coast-south outreach group/exchange program to foster mutual understanding of the issues that we red state progressives face. Welcome to our forum!

14. Hey, Taverner! Check CottonBear's great "y'all" usage just above!

There's y'all, and (at least) two more-specifically-inclusive variations. CottonBear just used the all y'all variant.

The other one, as you might expect, is y'all all. Usage would go something like this:

"You buncha ying-yangs that voted for bu$h. Y'all all need ta be totin' a gun ovair in EyeRack right now!"
