I'm from NC, the triad area. A big issue here is job loss to the textile, manufacturing and tobacco businesses. What about your areas?

My in-laws live in Lacombe. My husband grew up in Slidell. I love the live oaks, the bayous and the food! It's a beautiful area. We'll be down there soon under unfortunate circumstances. My brother-in-law has only a few weeks or maybe months to live. It's going to be a long, sad drive from Northeast Georgia.

I've lived in Central Texas for two-thirds of my life, having grown up in Indiana and Michigan.
It's my impression that most Texans don't consider themselves part of the South or any other region of the country -- you know, "Texas, It's a Whole Other Country!" I think East Texas has more in common with the South and West Texas has more in common with the West -- and that leaves Austin right in the middle!

My wife and I were both born raised here and the majority of both of our families are still here. I'm sick and tired of people taking shots at people in the south and in particular of people in Oklahoma. I could go on and on about this, however,....I ain't going to right now.
One thing I would like to point out to those who claimed McVeigh and Nichols were "homegrown wackjobs".....you got it wrong....McVeigh was born and raised in NEW YORK.......Nichols was born and raised in MICHIGAN.

One of the primary reasons Carson lost was because the repubs were able to tie Coburn in with Bush.....remember the ads, "a vote for Carson is a vote for Kerry, Kennedy and a vote against Bush." Might not be the best state in the country, but the people, for the most part are great.

I'm a NC native and grew up in Chattanooga. My Scots-Irish ancestors came over from Ireland in the 1700's and settled in the beautiful mountains of western NC. One of my aunts married Davey Crockett .
My community is under siege by Republicans who've manged to pass a non-partisan voting referendum. So in four years time, Republicans disguised as Democrats will try to take over and ruin our progressive city-county. Much work awaits us.

Charlottesville, Virginia. Actually I live outside the city in Albemarle County, in a precinct that went to Bush by a slim majority, but we were very proud that Albemarle County went to Kerry, reversing the 2000 results. C-ville proper is of course heavily Democratic, with 72% of the vote going for Kerry.
I'm a Californian married to a native Virginian, and I'll probably never be able to call myself a "Southerner" without reservations (I would have had no problem with "Virginian" if the Commonwealth had gone for Kerry this time around). I'm actually happier living in the semi-rural South than I ever was living in the Northeast (Connecticut, Philadelphia area, western New York), even though my politics were more at home there; the pace and tenor of life south of the Mason-Dixon line feels more familiar to a Southern Californian than it does up North. Lived in Tucson for seven years in the '90s and would go back in a heartbeat if it were just up to me.

It pisses me off at how much other DUers throw away the South. We have so much potential for growth in this region. I'm glad this group exists so we can all work together to build in the South.

66. Just outside Atlanta, GA here. Live outside, work inside the perimeter. |
|
Those familiar with the Atlanta area will appreciate what that means. Basically, inside 285 (the perimeter) is the lone bastion of blue in a sea of blood red. As i travel downtown, i gradually start to see fewer and fewer chimp stickers and the air gets fresher and fresher. Gotta keep fighting!

Born in Atlanta, grew up in Decatur, and I have lived in Clayton County for the past 30 years, while it grew and changed from primarily Democratic to Republican and now back to really "blue" Democratic. We even survived Newt Gingrich as our (least favorite) congressperson. Most of the Republicans I know are as upset with Bush as we are over the deficits and Iraq and the rest are "born-again" hypocrites. I am enjoying quoting new New Testament verses to them which, if nothing else, makes them go away.

Ahh, the fond childhood memories of traveling thru Riegelwood on a summer morning... ;-)
Actually, one of my favorite memories is of skiing on Lake Waccamaw- didn't see any alligators, though!
I was born in Clinton, raised (mostly- we moved a lot) in Fayetteville, and spent most of the past 20 years in Greenville, Raleigh and Wilmington- couple years out of state. Moved to Asheboro last year.
Most of (the NC branch of) my family is from Sampson and Craven Counties.

Southern edge of the ATL metro area. Lots of job loss in the textile industry here, too (the area's major source of emploment was te textile industry, until about a decade ago wen all the mills closed and the textile companies moved their operations overseas). And this area hasn't been experiencing the same growth as the rest of the Atlanta metro area thaks to absurdly high property taxes (some of the highest in the state) and general the general shortsightedness, stupidity, corruption and small-town mentality of the county and city officials.

State motto -- "We Dare Defend Our Rights"
According to a Birmingham News-Age Herald article by Marie Bankhead Owen (the director of the state Archives) dated April 23, 1939, she came upon the idea while searching for "a phrase that would interpret the spirit of our peoples in a terse and energetic sentence." A part of a poem entitled "What Constitutes a State?" by the 18th-century author Sir William Jones found in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations includes the stanza "Men who their duties know. But know their rights, and knowing, dare maintain."

120. I'm from beautiful Western, NC |
|
But now live outside of Atlanta.
Since graduating from college 12 or so years ago, I've been fortunate enough to live in the SF Bay and Los Angeles before moving back to the southeast to be closer to my mom and dad (the burden of being an only child). I never appreciated the mountain culture before I moved away from it.
I think the attitudes of California and the left coast are more compatible with who I am today, but it was a gift to see Appalachian culture from the outside for a period of time. It made me want to know more about the rich history of my Scottish, Irish and German ancestors who came before me to make a life in the mountains.

But now my wife and I (who is from Mississippi) are back in Texas. My mother in law lives in Miss. so I'd have to say TEXASSIPPI.

Family has been here for at least 9 generations. Some of them anyway.
I'm currently on the Northshore, across the Lake and about 30 miles from the city.
I've been here 20 years.
