Hey,
Interesting thread, and I sympathize with the sentiment. However, being proud to be a Southerner, or an American, or anything else I happen to be by accident of birth, doesn't make sense to me. There is just as much to be ashamed of, either regionally or nationally. Pride is *so* involved in the whole honor/aggression "let's fight a duel" mindset. Saying I'm neither proud nor ashamed would be two lies; saying I'm equally proud and ashamed-- to be a Southerner, an American, and a human being for that matter-- is closer to the truth.
