    | Does anyone know what this is? |

    | |
We have a favorite place for dim sum in Boston.
We try something new every time we visit and last time we went we had a smiling lady come by with a large insulated and lidded pot.
So we say yes and nod and she scooped out square white chunks and a pale liquid into a bowl.

It was cold, obviously tofu, and there was a taste of honey.

I'd like to make this at home if possible, but I can't find any recipe for it - anyone have any idea?

    | 2. Oh, they're always happy to tell us what it us, but... |

    | | ...they tell us in very-quickly-spoken Cantonese,so unless it's an item we're already familiar with,
we *STILL* don't know what it is ;)

    | 4. The Imperial Tea Room? |

    | | I certainly hope the place is still open, it was the only place you could get a real dim sum "tea lunch" in the city when I was there, complete with duck feet. I was usually the only honky in the joint when I was there, and pantomime ruled the day.
As for what you had, "sweet simmered tofu" comes to mind, tofu pressed and simmered in sugar water. It's more common as a breakfast food, but it can certainly appear as dim sum.

I had no clue what I was eating half the time in that place, I only know it was great.

    | 5. We're usually at Chau Chow City... |

    | | ...but once in a great while at China Pearl.
The sad part is that there are many, many more
 places yet to try.

    | | Edited on Mon Mar-08-10 12:26 PM by The empressof all I've had a sort of panna cotta made with Almond Milk at Dim Sum. It resembles Tofu a bit
I make it at home flavored with Chai Tea....
