Trial to store collards for a month without refrigeration a success! |

We like collards, but in this suburban Milwaukee neighborhood, the grocer only carries organic collard, which makes a cheap working class veggie pretty pricey, and a costly shame to waste.
A month ago the collard sold in the local store came still attached to the stalk. Rather than toss them in he frig, where the leaves that don't get used right away go limp, I trimmed the callus off the bottom of the stalk and set them in water in a drinking glass, and placed the glass near a window...
They not only stayed nice they actually sprouted roots! I wonder if lettus could be treated like a cutting too...Anyone?

The best way to store leaf lettuce is chilled. Dismantle the heads, wash the leaves, and partially spin them dry. Roll them up in a single layer in paper towels and put them into a plastic bag. I've had my late May garden abundance last through July and the sprouting of the fall crop first planting, although there wasn't much room in the fridge for anything else.
Some cuttings will root and some will not. My own feeling is that lettuce won't but you won't know that until you try.

right now we have some parsley in a class in the window. The problem is I buy a bunch and have leftovers, if I put them in the fridge I tend to forget to use it.
Besides, it's pretty!
