| Ketchup on eggs - gross, or the most? |
|
My wife has some unusual culinary affections, most of which I'll ignore for now, but the one that drives me particularly nuts is her fondness for putting Heinz ketchup on eggs.
Now I know eggs are sometimes eaten with salsa, but salsa's cool - fresh tomatoes (or maybe cooked, depending on the salsa). Heinz ketchup, however, is really just corn syrup and sodium benzoate.
I've asked different groups of people every once in a while. It generally seems split down the middle - people either think ketchup is god's gift to eggs, or they think it's a creation from hell. No one is neutral in their opinion.
What do y'all think? God's gift to breakfast, or breakfast from hell?

However, a nice egg sandwich with mayo, lettuce, a thin slice of onion and ketchup is the bomb. Has to be assembled in the proper order though -- bread, mayo, lettuce, egg, onion, ketchup, bread. A classic summertime meal. Second only to the cucumber sandwich which in its most elemental form is just bread, mayo, and cucumber slices (it very quickly spirals out of control into Salad On A Bun as you add other ingredients).

Introduce her to salsa. Really. Ketchup is tomatoes, vinegar and chemicals. Salsa is tomatoes, peppers, onion, lime juice, and a little cilantro. Completely different flavor experience. Ketchup is kid stuff.
Ketchup on fries is barbaric, too. Dunk if you must, but don't make them look like they bled to death on your plate.
Thank you.

She has ketchup on fries too, but that's so common in this country it doesn't come off as unusual. I can't stand it myself, though.
In Europe, and in certain areas in the States, it's not uncommon to put mayo on them. I wouldn't do that either, but at least I might like it better than ketchup.
With good (I'm mean really good) fries, you have to put malt vinegar on them (while they're still hot). That's what you need.

Nope, to me I didn't care for it. The restaurant we went to also had a dip mayonnaise after the vinegar spritz.
I think we all love what we grew up with, and french fries are made to dip in ketchup for me :-}

|
when trying to amuse one of my nieces. I make a "book" out of stapled pieces of printer paper and we drew it together. She had this nice story about a princess going and my page was "scrambled eggs and ketchup".
So, when it was all done, I'd "read it to her". "This is the garden at Auntie Beth's studio. This is a princess who comes to the garden. She's wearing a big beautiful dress. These are the flowers that Auntie Beth lets her pick, any ones she wants. Here are some scrambled eggs and ketchup".
So, Rachel will either laugh every single time her boyfriend has scrambled e&k or she will will throw him out. Even money.

which is a Middle Eastern hot sauce I'd tasted at an Israeli restaurant in town and then hustled off to the library to learn how to make.
Now I just use Sriracha sauce, a good chile-garlic sauce to use when I don't have the time or energy to do a batch of harissa.

For me, it's like fries -- if you have one with ketchup, then you must eat the rest with ketchup. Same with eggs, if you have one bite with, the rest must also.
And try a scrambled egg on some wheat toast with ketchup, it's an amazing sandwich.
As for salsa, that has it's place too. Huevos rancheros, for example. But also, a chile relleno that is coated in egg and then fried, is eaten with salsa.
Growing up, I recall that my sister would NOT eat scrambled eggs unless they were smothered in ketchup.

I picked up the habit from my dad who says he picked up the habit in the Navy as a way to make powdered eggs more palatable. Growing up, when egss were on the menu, ketchup was on the table.
Oddly, I don't realy like ketchup on anything else, not even french fries-- though I have been known to dip a deep-fried potato in Heinz 57, which is really just ketchup on steroids. It's good on eggs, too! ;)

Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 12:01 PM by The empressof all
Eggs and tomatoes are a pretty wonderful combo though. One of my favorite egg dishes is baked eggs.
I empty a can of Rotel in a small pan and heat it up a bit. I add a little salt and pepper and crack 4 or so eggs right on to the Rotel. I cover with a layer of Cheddar and stick in the oven until melty. You want the eggs cooked but the yolks still runny.
I serve with toast or on Black Beans and Tortillas.
It's easy and it's absolutely fabulous.

What grossed me out once was when I was watching an episode of the travel show 'Globe Trekker' on PBS, and the host said one of the most popular street foods in Glasgow (or perhaps it was Edinborough, but Scotland somewhere) was a battered, deep fried Snickers bar served with ketchup.
Only thing worse was the episode in Uganda where they were eating skewered, deep fried mice of some kind.

and one of the sponsors of an adventure show about the French Foreign Legion was Heinz ketchup. The commercial featured scrambled eggs with ketchup smothering the eggs. The first one was delish! The second one (my mom would only scramble one at a time for me) left me still wanting more. When I finished the third one I barfed for the rest of the morning and have never been tempted to douse egg with ketchup since. Still can't think of the combo without getting all 'urp-ey'.

a favorite British breakfast food. I can cheerfully eat huevos rancheros with refried beans for breakfast, but I somehow find the thought of baked beans on toast repulsive.
I can't abide catchup on anything, although salsa on eggs sounds pretty good. It's a combination of taste and conditioning, I think.

Salsa with eggs sounds good, but I've not tried it yet.
My guy grosses me out with ketchup when he uses it on pork chops or pork steak.
Ketchup is strictly for hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries according to my taste. But I am Norwegian, so there's that. LOL.
