My first precious yellow squash will be ready to harvest in a day or so.

Last year, the squash vine borers took out my squash and zucchini plants before I got a single fruit off them, so I am extra sentimental about this one (it's only my second year gardening) and want to make something extra yummy with it.

So C&Bers, any fun suggestions for something creative and different to do with my pretty crookneck?

2. If it's the first one from the garden

I'd keep it simple so the flavor of the squash comes through. Brush it with some oil and fresh herbs and toss it on the grill.

Usually the squash casseroles, breads, chips, etc. start happening once we're sick of eating it fresh.

4. I'm afraid they came to my house...

two days ago it looked like the deer had passed through my garden
yesterday I found the real culprets - nasty little buggers

lost one huge plant, and tho' my brave intrepid mate cleaned out the stalks of the other 3..
it ain't lookin good for more zuc... the spaghetti squash is kind of droopy and the yellow squash is next in line.

7. Apparently, I brought down the wrath of the gods b/c just yesterday I found that SVBs had attacked

my zucchini plants, though not my yellow squash. I scraped out the stalk, applied a massive amount of diatomaceous earth and covered the stalks with more soil. *fingers crossed*

I had been applying DE all season to the stalks and it DID look like the borers got into the stalk but not very far up it, so maybe the DE killed them off before they could do massive damage. :shrug:

Grilling is nice, just a swipe of evoo with herbs
or roasted with other goodies like onions and mushrooms

6. We got pretty wiped out, too.

Got to eat a few and freeze a little before everything died. We're going to do a second planting, maybe, now that the borers and beetles are done laying and hatching babies for the season.

Enjoy your squash! I like to just saute the slices gently in butter with salt, pepper, and herbs, then top with shredded parm and cover just til it melts. Simple and really good.

The web page that I read (out of Virginia)
said that the borers can do two cycles each
year!
