my husband brought it home from the in-laws so I had to cook it. :) It's one of those vegetables I won't go out of my way to buy but if someone gives me some, I'll cook it.
I think it's pretty harmless and I'm not sure why it gets a bad rap. My teens ate it as usual. Since it was fried, they didn't mind (I don't fry much!) I don't like the boiled methods or even the gumbo-ish versions myself.
Do you eat it?

I have enjoyed okra pickles, okra stewed with tomatoes, and okra in gumbo. It's very high in calcium and fiber. I also like the idea of eating thistles. I especially like it as a summer replacement for hash browns on the breakfast or brunch plate. :thumbsup:

and love it. I also love it pickled. I have actually found that Allen's okra, canned, it pretty good in soup, for those of us up here who don't grow our own.

and fry it in my cast iron skillet until it's crispy and a little past golden brown. I also like it in gumbos and added to veggie soups.

It keeps it from getting that slimy texture. Sort of seals all the moisture inside. Makes a world of difference

in cornmeal (not cornbread mix) and fry in a small amount of corn oil. Drain on paper towels or brown paper bags, add salt. It is utterly delicious.

and once it's nice and brown, add a little cornmeal to the pan. It will cling lightly to the okra and remove any slimy feel. It really is easy.

Now, I love it Indian style, and frankly, don't do frying very well, or I'd try to make it myself.
This and french fries, I'll let the restaurant do. :-)

I don't fry much stuff, seems I always burn it, but okra is so easy to grow (Clemson Spineless) I always have a lot of it and you can get it frozen easily in the winter. The way I fix it is to slice up an onion and cook it in a little oil, then toss the okra on top and dump a can of tomatoes on top of it. Cook it a little and stir it a couple of times till the okra is softened. Easy and hard to mess up.:9
