I have a 12 X 14 foot kitchen with everything slapped up against one wall and it sucks, only 48 inches of counter space available, barely enough next to the stove for a small cutting board. Forget about putting appliances on that counter, too, because the cabinets were hung too low. It was designed by a man who only set foot in his own kitchen to drink directly out of the milk carton.
Sometimes I think I would probably prefer a tiny kitchen that had been planned by someone who actually cooked to any sort of huge kitchen planned out by an architect who did not. I've seen too many laughable trophy kitchens in magazines.
I have drawn plans to modify my horror of a kitchen. I just don't know if I'll stay here long enough to do them.

| 3. When I had a house, I designed my own kitchen and my husband made it happen. |

It was set up perfectly, imo, and I loved it.
My current kitchen is basically arranged the same way, but on an itsy, bitsy scale. The biggest drawback is that I have to move everything to get anything out of the fridge or pantry (both open from the top). But if I plan correctly and get everything out before I start cooking, it is a delight. I take zero steps to the oven, sink, cabinets and drawers!
And, of course, it is wide open to the living/dining area (saloon), which is an absolute must in my world. I hate being stuck in another room while guests are enjoying their cocktails and appetizers.
Hope you get a chance to get a better kitchen one way or another.

We both cook, and I Wanted efficiency and no upper cabinets lol. The process was a great experience.

| 6. we have a huge kitchen (back porch area was enclosed |

to increase the size long before we bought the house), with lots of counter space. But I can't say we use all that space well, or that it is set up well!
