| 1. The advertising campaig for Nutella really bothers me. |
|
It promotes this product as "part of a healthy breakfast" or something to that effect -- the claim is that its a wonderful breakfast food for children - just slather it on some whole wheat bread (yeah, like that will help).
I mean, face it, while it tastes great, it's nothing more than the semi-liquid center of a candy bar or chocolate truffle. It may have some nutritional value, but its extremely high in sugar and fat.
Send kids off to school pumped full of that -- great idea. Why not just give them some Red Bull and pack of Camels to complete the experience.

However I was in Europe as a child and I remember breakfasts with Chocolate Sprinkles on the table to put on the buttered bread. It was pretty common in the Netherlands. Nutella is everywhere in Europe and a common breakfast ingredient. It's far more common than Peanut Butter which is difficult to find. (or at least it use to be)
BTW my most favorite decadent breakfast is stuffed french toast made with Nutella and raspberry jam-dipped in the egg wash then coated in Graham Cracker crumbs and then fried in butter. :wow:

And today I was on the phone with someone who argued that it's no different from peanut butter. Then she pulled the peanut butter jar and the nutella jar from the cupboard to compare. Ooops. WAY more sugar in the nutella.
It might be a wonderful product, and I know a LOT of people adore it. But promoting it as a healthy breakfast for children is just wrong.
My friend on the phone says well, it may be better for the kid than a bowl of Sugar Pops or a toaster strudel. My response-- kids shouldn't be eating that for breakfast either! And the cereal companies don't dare to call Sugar Pops healthy.

| 5. I have used it in desserts before but I didn't think.... |

it was a particularly healthy option as the commercial implies. I figured I just didn't know enough about it. I have heard people rave about it but aside from using it for little petit fours, I haven't' used it for anything else.

My cousin's teenager spreads it on homemade peanut butter cookies. And she's about 40 pounds overweight incidentally.

| 10. First time I had Nutella was at a dorm- turned-tourist lodgings for the summer |
|
in Bruges. I felt like my son did when he got his first piece of Hallowe'en candy and wanted to keep going back to that first house all night.
We did great all over Europe as far as resisting too many sweets, come to think of it, until we hit Belgium.
Damn you, Belgium.

| 11. I first had it in Germany |
|
The hotel where I stayed had little single-serve containers of it along with the jams and jellies at their breakfast buffet. Damn you German hotel. Wish they had it in single-serve packs here. I have no self-control, so I wind up eating the stuff by the spoonful, without bread, crackers or fruit. Fortunately, it's usually so expensive, I can't afford the splurge too often.
