| In case of hurricane . . . . |
|
I bought a Rubbermaid cooler and have a place that supplies tons of ice as I'm not sacrificing $150+ worth of food between the frig and the freezer. If we lose electricity for a few days or a week, I want to be ready.
I also whipped up homemade peanut butter in the food processor for riding out the storm.

| 4. A better idea is to fill the freezer with soda bottles full of water |
|
They help keep things cold and as they melt, you've got potable water.
Coolers don't hold ice all that well, IMO, and that ice place that supplies tons of it is not going to be able to supply any of it if the power goes out.

Another tip -- if you have any freezers that are only partially full, fill up the empty spaces with as many containers of water as you can find -- ziploc bags will even do. The freezer not only holds longer when full, but if you don't have water for a few days, you can use that as the ice melts as a source of drinking and cooking water.

| 5. Best advice I can give you is to not open your refrigerator or freezer, if you can avoid it. |
|
It will stay very cold in there for several days.
Ice will melt faster in a cooler and may not be able to be replenished if electricity is down.

My freezer is packed and I've been told that ensures the temperature being retained for longer periods.
