Writing as mirror image?
My daughter who just turned 5 writes all of her letters and numbers as you would see them in a mirror (upside down and backwards too). I know writing things backwards is typical for this age group, but I can't find anything about the mirror image.

Experience?

1. Possible sign of dyslexia
Most kids grow out of mirror writing but some don't and it can be a sign of dyslexia. You might want to talk with a psychologist or school psychologist to see if testing is in order. If there are other signs such as slow development of basic reading skills in particular you might want to look into testing.

2. My daughter, four years old, does the backward thing.
I have not noticed upside down. Mostly she writes forward. Occasionally she write her letters in a column.

3. I would be very concerned and
get her tested. My sister did this and was dyslexic. It's a tipoff. Can she recognize her letters and sounds? Can she write her letters? Is she showing any signs of reading?

Dyslexia runs in my family. The earlier it's diagnosed and treated, the better the cure is. Our school waited until the end of second grade to test my daughter. Most research shows that's way too late. Test early and treat early. Luckily, I was aware of the dyslexia and started treatment at around 4. Just what I knew on my own. This is the daughter that just got into college and reads 3 to 4 books a week. She still struggles with foreign language and spelling but otherwise she has overcome the dyslexia.

4. My daughter does the mirror thing too and this is what I was told:
My Godmother specializes in early education development and according to her, this is not something to be overly concerned with. Most likely she doesn't have a learning disability BUT it's recommended that she get tested just to make sure...testing her is also good for YOUR peace of mind too.

You should be able to call the school district and have her tested for free.

5. That freaked me out! But it goes away...
I used to take her little notes and feel insane LOL... but I too was told it is not usually a problem. I worked on it with her, and since she started kindergarten she doesn't do it anymore (once in a great while she'll do it with 3).
