my daughter is having her tonsil and adnoids out Friday |
|
and I'm so nervous. I know she will be okay, but she's only seven and something about her having surgery has me unnerved. Anybody gone through this experience?

1. Not only did I have this done (many, many years ago) |
|
but many of my clients have had it done as well.
She'll be sore, but she'll be fine. Best wishes to all of you :)

2. Far, far better to do it at this age. |
|
Done in the teenage or later years, it's a very painful procedure that takes a long time to recover from.
She'll be MUCH better off. My wife had the same thing done when she was about that age.

3. I was 7 years old or about that when I had it done |
|
I also had my ears drilled too. I remember having a lot of pain in my ears, also my throat was very sore, and my Mom made spagetti, which was my favorite, and I was really sad that I couldn't eat it. So make sure you don't cook your daughter's favorite food while her throat is still sore.
Also, I remember being really disappointed because in all the stories that were read to me about kids getting their tonsils out, the kids always got ice cream, and when I had my tonsils out they said I couldn't have dairy (I guess because of mucous?) But I could have sherbert.
One thing about my Mom, when I was little she was always a wreck whenever something happend to us, and I always felt like I had to be brave and strong for her, to take care of her. So I guess if you act very calm and strong and soothing to your daughter, she will feel protected and safe.
My son never had his tonsils out, but he did spend a few days in the hospital when he was 18 months old because of a fibral seizure - it was stressful, so if any adults around offer you help and support, make sure you take them up on it.
Good luck to you both!

4. I thought they stopped routinely doing adenoids |
|
when they did tonsils. When I live, they've even stopped routinely doing tonsils - they do serve a purpose.

5. You're assuming it's routine in this case though. It may not be. |
|
I few kids I have worked with have had their tonsils out for medical reasons, ranging from "kissing" tonsils that are so large that they block the throat to acute, recurring tonsilitis.

6. She's had the surgery and she is doing fine, however, |
|
the doctor said her tonsils were so big they were touching one another and her adnoids were blocking 90% of her airway. She had constantly complained about not being able to breathe. The doctor said it was a good thing that the surgery was done.

7. Great, and how are the parents doing? |
|
Even minor surgeries can be stressful, make sure you take good care of yourself too!
