Anyone's baby ever make him/herself throw up?
|
This scared the ever-lovin' crap out of me yesterday. I was in a restaurant with the baby, waiting for hubby to meet us. I was feeding the baby avocado, which is one of his favorite foods. He's happy, energetic, he's been having a really good day. Then he just shoves 3 fingers into his mouth, down to the back of his throat, and gags himself. He vomits some avocado. I say "Baby, No!" completely horrified. Then he does it again. I grab his hand and he fights with me. He calms down, I let go, and he gags himself again. It took me about 15 minutes to distract him from making himself puke.
What the hell?!
Hubby says that he is just exploring his body and discovering what his body can do. That makes sense--but I've never heard of this or read about it before.
Baby had a high fever last night and this morning, so they're going to the doctor. Hubby will tell doctor about the incident.
Do you think it's related to him being sick last night and this morning? Or do you think it's what my husband says? Did your baby ever do this?
BTW, he's 11 months old.

1. Neither of mine ever did that.

If he has a fever, it could be that his tummy was already upset, and he was just helping it along. He may instinctively know that you feel better once you throw up. I've never seen a baby or toddler do this before.

Our doctor was not available today, and my husband says he seems fine now. So we're going to wait for our doctor to get back before we take him in. I'm curious what he'll say.
I just hope it never happens again. 11 months is a little young for bulimia.

3. They do it because they can....

Mine is a year old and back around 11 months he did the same thing. According to my pediatrician, he's just testing the limits. Freaked me out totally. I was cutting up vegetables for dinner, and he was sitting in his chair eating a snack, when all of a sudden I heard this gagging sound. I immediately ran to him and whacked him on the back, thinking he was choking. He straightened right up. Then, because I was watching him, I saw him do it. That was the only episode, I guess he found it unpleasant. I'm a little surprised he hasn't done it again, because he's all about my reactions to his behavior (BITING!!! AAAAAGH!) and this produced quite a reaction.

4. My eight year old autistic son is doing it these days, but isn't throwing

up. I think he's doing it either for attention, or to help himself clear the allergy gunk from his throat. It's very annoying. Sounds like he's going to barf a lung, but he hasn't thrown up yet.
We're having other similar problems with him right now, like intentional spilling of drinks, intentional wetting, etc.
