My daughter has been teaching herself to read and write. Her current obsession, writing bathroom words. She sounds them out, then writes them down and giggles over them with her friends. I tend to laugh, too, and am proud of her new found abilities. But these are also words she normally wouldn't be allowed to dwell on or repeat endlessly. Her most recent creation was "pp bum pp pupu I hate you pp (actually IHU PP)".
So do I continue to encourage this because she is a smart little kid mastering literacy skills, or do I set boundaries because we do not normally say "hate" or repeat bathroom words endlessly at our house? Her teacher at preschool doesn't seem concerned, and none of the other parents have complained, either. One thing is for sure, she is smart enough to get around the rules with me :)

What has worked for me is turning and looking at my son and asking "Are we in the bathroom? No? Then stop the bathroom talk." He asked a few times to go into the bathroom and say all the bathroom words he choose, and we let him. Then the fun wore off and he rarely does it anymore.
Hope this helps!

| 2. I guess I should let her go to the bathroom to write those words. |
