| GRRRR! Advice/support NEEDED! 2 1/2 weeks of school left and I've absolutely had it |
|
with my son's school and teacher; help!
My son is 10 and is certainly no angel--he's willful and stubborn as hell but has made terrific progress in controlling his behavior this year. I fully accept that and have done my damnedest to help his school help him control it and all have agreed that it seems to be paying off.
But now it appears his teacher is looking for ANY excuse to make certain he doesn't "make his day" (the school's crappy discipline program). She wrote a note to me saying he "shoved" (her words) another student into the water fountain. But according to my son--AND the school counselor, that isn't what happened at all.
The other student was running (against the rules) and both heads collided and the other, smaller boy fell down. But little Hayden made his day, while my son receives a note with the word "shoving" used.
I used to be a teacher--I have sympathy for what they go through, but I'm just about at wit's end. I want to even pull him out and home school the rest of the year (he starts a new school next fall since we have moved.)
I think she's begun to single him out knowing full well he won't be returning next year. Do I seem too sensitive to this? I freely admit he's had some problems, but this doesn't appear to be his fault from what I've heard (and not just from BAL Jr.)
If nothing else, I need calmed down in order not to make a rash decision. HELPHELPHEEELP!
Thanks, gang.

| 1. Your son sounds like a typical Tom Sawyer type boy. |
|
I would not worry about it, most boys are like this and it's normal, I was like that and definitely gave my teachers a hard time. Luckily for me my father was a hippie Doctor who refused to listen to the school that wanted to put me on Ritalin. The other good news is there is no such thing as a school permanent record.

| 2. I had a kid who melted down every year the last few weeks |

After studying it, I don't think it's that uncommon. I also think that teachers try to throw their last disciplinary actions during the end of the year.
I had a very difficult child. She was/is extremely intelligent but very obstinate. (Well, ADD, aspergers, dyslexia) I can't tell you the many conversations I had with authorities. What I learned is to put everything in writing and to cc the district. You can't let something slide since it may come up years later. It did for us since the same students harassed my daughter years later.
Just because, I come from a long line of teachers. At least four generations. I still think about being a teacher.

| 3. Have you looked into that he might be reacting to being bullied |
|
either by other students and/or staff.
I agree with Cally that you shouldn't just let it go and that you document everything.
