Well, that was fun.... today's lesson, giving three year olds pennies

is never a good idea.

My nephew Nick, who is a scant three months younger than my son Ian, brought two pennies to the house in his pocket with him today. Ian, being the braver of the two, popped one into his mouth and swallowed.

Rather than drop directly into his stomach the penny lodged in his esophagus.

Luckily the penny dropped out of his esophagus and into his belly just after they X-Rayed him at the emergency room. He has to go back for another X-Ray tomorrow morning to make sure the penny is moving through his digestive system as properly as a penny can, then we have to play "miner 49er" in his poop for the next week until we strike copper.

Anyone else have a similar story?

1. My son swallowed a (yikes) watch battery.

We had to report it to poison control just in case, but they said they rarely actually cause harm.

We went through the ppo for a week before it found its way out.

2. Well, I caught LeftyKid standing in the washing machine tub yesterday

He'd done it before when the machine was empty, but never while I was presoaking diapers. :puke:

3. yup, daughter was 11 months old and crawling

everywhere, thought all my old purses were totally empty...wrong!!! She did indeed find a penny and promptly swallowed it. Very quickly she was making a terrible noise and some vomit was coming up, just a tad and i started freaking out, my husband picks her up and turned her upside down while i was calling 911. thank God they have all the address info because i was crying so hard i didn't think the operator could understand me. We lived right near a firehouse so within 3 minutes there was 2 fire engines and an ambulance at my door. Just as i opened it i heard the penny hit my kitchen floor with a little clink and i heard my daughter take the biggest breath of her life and than laugh and say DA DA. I swear i thought i would need a sedative, the fire and ambulance crew were so wonderful, most of them parents themselves and many had been through similar things. While they were they they went through our rooms at my pleading to see if i needed any further baby proofing. All purses went on the top shelf of my closet from that day on and no change any place to be seen.

4. Hasn't happened here

but I purposely swallowed a dime when I was like 6 to prevent my parents from going out. They went out anyhow and told me I'd pass it. LOL...
