Poll question: Our golden retriever has cancer and it's time to say goodbye. Should I |

He's almost 20 but when he gets home in a couple of days, he'll be in the middle of saying goodbye to his long time girlfriend too, who is leaving for college for the first time, in a week.
I don't know whether I should try to minimize the heartbreak for my son by getting this sorrow dealt with before he returns, or wait until he gets home. He said his goodbyes before he left, but here we are...every day seems to be harder for my dear sweet much beloved furry friend, and her 13 long years are coming to a close.
Should I

1. I think that you should put your dog to sleep at the correct time for the dog |

If she is not suffering then wait until at least your son can say good-by. If she is suffering, then put her to sleep as soon as possible, waiting for your son to say good-by is no reason to cause pain for the poor dog.
When my dog had cancer she was relatively pain free for six months before I had to put her to sleep.
