My son is potty trained!

Finally. We'd been working with him off and on for some time. He was terrified of his potty chair, which delayed things quite a bit. Then he got too big for it and was reluctant to use the toilet. Finally, I just bit the bullet and switched him to underwear all the time, and resigned myself to carpet cleaning around the clock. I wish I would have done that a long time ago. Within a day he was fully day trained. We haven't had an accident yet! When he used the toilet for the first time, I cried tears of joy. I couldn't have been happier if I had hit the lottery.

You are free from Diaper Jail!!! What a huge milestone! Get used to seeing EVERY public bathroom on the planet now. Once he figures out that all he has to say is "I need to potty" and you will jump to take him the race will be on!

Frankly I was a lot happier with seeng every bathroom than having to change pants...

5. Potty trained son

OK - it's official - I hate you. LOL. Seriously though, congratulations. That is wonderful news.

Trying to potty train my 2 and a half year old daughter is not going well. I work and my husband stays home with her. He keeps saying that he is going to put her in training pants and I've dutifully left them out in plain sight for him - but he always has some excuse as to why he hasn't used them, usually while bitching that the kid isn't potty trained. Hello - I work all day and you're the stay-at-home parent. Just do it would you?

It is frustrating, but it will happen. We hadn't even started training at 2 and a half because of moving and then new baby, and our son was well over three before we had any measure of success. Just stay away from the pull ups. I really do think that was a major reason why it took so long for us.

6. I never used anything other than panties or training pants

(the cloth kind) when training our girls. They were all about 2 years old, and put two and two together when they got wet. It didn't take long. I remember with the middle one, my husband was going to take her out to the store, and asked, "Where are the diapers?" I said, NO WAY! Let her pee before you got the store, and she'll be fine. She was. :)

Of course, pull-ups weren't even available when the first two were toilet-training, but I never understood the need for them. It's a glorified diaper, and I think it leads to confusion.

7. You're right about the pull ups.

I think it was really just a way for the diaper companies to extend a parent's dependency on their product. One book I read said they can delay potty training up to a year. We probably would have stayed away from them altogether, but when our son reached potty training age, we were moving, then I was on bed rest, and then we had a colicky newborn. It was easier to just slap on the pull ups rather than dealing with the mess. Knowing what I know now, we would have done otherwise.

9. I think they can be good for nighttime training,

provided you get to your child before they wake up and say, "Heck, I'll just pee in THESE things." ;)
