KDE or Gnome? Give me your thougths on the Linux Desktop.

1. I prefer Gnome but use KDE for the extra software,

its a shame that they are not 100% compatible because there are Gnome utilities that I'd like to us under KDE and vice versa.

All that said, I use KDE day-to-day. Neither is perfect but Gnome has a nice feel to it IMHO.

2. You can use GNOME apps under KDE and vice versa.

You do have to make sure you have all the appropriate libraries installed, but once that's done, just about everything should work. I do it all the time. (that is, I use KDE, but frequently run GNOME apps inside of KDE.)

I'd say that KDE has more software available (though both environments have apps that the other doesn't.) KDE is also more customizable. GNOME has a better user-interface - the menus aren't too big and cluttered, and GNOME does a better job of obeying Fitts' Law.

3. I use Gnome.

The history of KDE was commercial (based on Qt by Trolltech) and I was a Debian/GNU kind of user.

4. GNUStep / Windowmaker is my favorite

I also like Enlightenment. But it's kind of sluggish. Windowmaker is still the best IMO.

14. Enlightenment has always been that way. I do like WindowMaker.

It's been years since I've run Linux.


I liked the look and feel of Gnome, but I liked some of the KDE software.

5. I use KDE

but it just because that is what I started with. I'm familiar with it and have no desire to check anything else out. It works so I just leave it alone.

If you ever cure boredom by playing with eye-candy (as I do far too frequently) you can get lost in there, especially when you start playing with some of the optional bits like deKorator, XGL/Compiz||Beryl, kbfx, etc.

Of course I've been known to install two dozen color schemes, window decorations, and icons, throwing in a few themes for good measure, all in one shot, use all of them within a period of an hour, then go back to the default before logging out.

I have issues.

8. KDE mostly ...

I've flirted with a couple others, but I always end up back with KDE except on the older boxes I've played with that won't really run KDE (or Gnome) very well.

I have most of the libraries for Gnome installed as well but have never used it for any period of time except during my brief stint using Fedora. I have a huge hard drive with far too much space allocated to root, so I just figured, why not. I use several Gnome based apps on a regular basis and occasionally play with others, and I got tired of having to install this or that library every time I played with something new.

11. I prefer Gnome. It's not as "busy".

And it's simpler. And I like the development tools.

That said, I have nothing against KDE, and if I can find a less-cluttered implementation of it, I'll certainly give it a try. Gnome is NOT a religious choice for me.

Hopefully, as architecture becomes more modular, the desktop will be just another app suite. It's half the way there already.
