| Looking for a web-administered FTP server. |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 10:01 AM by trotsky
A tech support organization I work with uses Microsoft IIS as their FTP server for transferring files to/from customers and prospects.
Problems: * Setup for new accounts is cumbersome. Create ftp directory, create ftp user, etc. * No way to automatically follow up and remove old unused accounts, they just accumulate. * Limited access to the console of the server (Microsoft admin Terminal Services). to name a few.
Anyway, what I'm looking for is an open source FTP server that has a web-based configuration interface. The FTP server needs a certain number of "fixed" accounts for support engineers, but also the ability to generate "temp" accounts for customers and prospects that expire and/or delete after a specified amount of time. The web-based config isn't absolutely required but would be extremely nice as not all the users will have Linux/command-line experience.
Does anyone know of an FTP server package that can do that?
On edit: I probably didn't make it clear, I intend to run this replacement server on an open source platform, not Windows. Likely FreeBSD.

| 1. Have you tried Filezilla Server? |

It only runs on Windows. I don't know about this "temp account" capability, sort of doubt it has that.
If you're not committed to an open-source OS, this might work ok.

Crushftp does the web admin and runs on Linux (so, potentially FreeBSD) but isn't open source; Filezilla is open source and has a remote admin tool (exe, not web-based) but is Windows only; and Proftpd is open source and runs on FreeBSD, but doesn't have a web interface (Although I guess you could hack something out with the graphical front-end, gproftp, and VNC if you were feeling brave)...
Edit: I suppose you could try Filezilla server + Wine... :o

I ended up going with Serv-U for Windows. Not only is it web-administered, it also has a web interface for uploading/downloading plus it can handle blind transfer accounts - thus keeping the number of accounts we need to a minimum.

| 5. Webmin has an FTP module standard with it... |

...and it sounds like it might meet your needs. I've used webmin for Snort, DNS, and Web Servers and love it!
