Ubuntu's "nedit" build seems broken |
|
Anyone here use NEDIT for text editing? I've been using it for a long time. I very much enjoy the Linux way of doing things, but I've never understood the allure of emacs or vi. Maybe it's a problem with me, but I just don't understand why something that is conceptually so simple as text editing should be so confusing. That's why I've long used NEDIT for editing code. It's simple, and gets the job done.
Until recently. The NEDIT package in the latest Ubuntu release (Kooky Koala, or something. I can't remember these nicknames) is a nightmare. I'm still using it daily, but it is getting to be a pain in the butt.
I can't remember all the little annoyances. But one is trying to search in a newly-opened file. The search dialog will not receive input unless you've actively clicked in the editor window, before beginning your search.
The current NEDIT build seems seriously broken to me. Maybe I should try gedit instead. I hate the crappy Motif GUI anyway.
Is anyone familiar with what I speak?

1. I haven't used that one ... |
|
... so I can't say.
However, I too am lacking the gene that makes one a fan of vi. I do like a highly modified emacs, but not so much for simple editing tasks.
I usually use pico or nano. Have you tried either of these?

When I had a shell account on the university computer. This was in the very early '90's. I may've had a 14k modem at the time. It worked surprisingly well, but I haven't thought about that editor in a long time.

FWIW ...
It's replacement for pico with extended functionality, e.g. search and replace.

Are you actually using Karmic or are you using Jaunty?

I thought I made it up!
EDIT: Oh, you said "Karmic." Well, I guessed the correct animal, anyway. :)
I'm actually currently using "jaunty jackalope."
