| 2. VirtualBox is a free program that allows you to run other operating systems in emulated hardware |
|
inside a window in your main program
So, for example, my usual machine runs Snow Leopard, but suppose I want to try out Ubuntu: I can download a dmg of the LiveCD and define a virtual machine that boots from the dmg with a certain amount of hard drive space allocated to the virtual machine; if I want to explore further, I do install the OS from the dmg to the virtual hard drive in the same way I could install from a physical LiveCD to a physical hard drive -- and so on
It's not perfect but much of what you can do on a real machine you can also do in the emulator.
