Wide screen LCD monitor question

I'm looking to purchase a new monitor. Do the wide screen monitors use the whole screen area to display DU pages as my current, circa 2004 lcd does or is there a blank space at each side? I'd really rather have a new monitor that has the same ratio as I currently use, 1280x1024 only larger but I seem to not see any of them in the stores. I admit I haven't looked too extensively yet.
We recently upgraded to a wide screen TV and I'm not happy with the way it makes many programs seem out of proportion in the height to width ratio, short and wide.

5 wide screen monitors total on 2 computers from 3 different manufactures and all of them display DU full screen.
