Just installed on my laptop. Pretty similar to Ubuntu 11.04 without Unity and you don't have to screw with restricted packages to play DVD's. Installed in about 15 minutes-only had to install Nvidia driver afterwards.

1. I think I may see whether I can get a distro more to my taste simply by replacing unity |
|
with openbox and then going through the configuration rigamarole https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Openbox#What%20is%20Openbox?

2. I'll be downloading this here shortly |

Hopefully I can get autocad to work and if I do I'll probably do a new install with mint. Do you know if this comes with firefox 5 or not? I'm a sucker for new OS installs anyway.

I've learned that with a lot of things it's best not to be at the bleeding edge.
My laptop is used mostly for the rare occasions when I travel, so I really only need the basics on it. Occasionally I take it with me to someone's house if they are having connection problems.
My preferred OS is actually XP X64. It's more stable than regular XP and not as much of a resource hog as 7. The only quirk is sometimes having to track down the proper driver but I've always been able to find it. The only weird application problem was that WordPerfect 11 will not work with 64-bit XP so I installed 12. Then on 7 it was the other way around. I ended up taking 7 off my one machine because I had to keep screwing with it. I have 6 computers here including the laptop and my HTPC. Two have XP, two have XP X64 one has Ubuntu 11.04 and the laptop has Mint 11.

5. I've gone back to ubuntu 10.10, its an autocad thing for me |
|
If it won't run autocad I have no need for it and I've yet to get autocad to work properly in ubuntu 11.04. I can get it to run but not like its designed to. Anyways upgrade took me to firefox 6 and thunderbird 6 this morning. When I was playing with 11.10 it had firefox 6 beta and thunderbird 6 beta but they still had issues then. I'm not sure what all the changes are but they both seem to open pages faster

6. I've gone back to 10.10 also. I WANT my windows to re-open after reboot or shutdown! |
|
I've tried everything, the only thing works is to Hibernate. I want my computer to power off in 5 sec or less... can't do that with Hibernating(duh). Can't wait for the next one to come out.
