Thunderbird help

I just installed Thunderbird today, and am having three major problems. I have one profile that uses three email accounts. One of the accounts constantly pulls every email from the past month every time it gets mail. Its a POP account, and I have told thunderbird not to leave messages on the server, then told it to leave messages on the server but delete them when I deleted them form my local inbox. Nothing worked.

The second problem is that none of my locla folders are bolded to show that they have new messages unless I highlight them. Finally, the new message notification will pop up, and I will check every folder -- including the junk folder-- only to find that Thunderbird thinks there is no new email. I have no idea where to even begin to look for on those problems, and the support forum has been zero help.

I loathe Outlook, which is why I went to Thunderbird, but I am not wedded to it. If I cnanot come up with solutions for these problems, can anyone reccomend a different mail client for an XP Pro machine?
