I just saw this post in another forum. I thought it might be of interest here in American History. The links provided are: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/collections/civil_war_maps/http://www.komotv.com/stories/34737.htmI haven't done any more than glance at them yet, but they look to be quite interesting. *edit* <for clarity>

The LoC has, imo, been quite lax about utilizing the Internet as a resource. Their image collection, while interesting, has traditionally been devoid of the kind of content researchers want and need.
I love maps. I have a 1960's version of the Official Records Atlas. The book is huge and contains reproductions of plates made of original maps used by officers in the battles themselves. I have been known to spend hours pouring over them, following troop positions, examining terrain, etc.

minded person. I get lost in verbal descriptions of physical locations and relative positional relationships. One glance at a map though, whether I'm trying to navigate in a strange town or understand the dynamics of battlefield, and the picture will become immediately clear.
I really don't have enough research experience with the LoC, and their utilization of the internet as resource, to have an opinion on their past performance. But, if nothing else, this announcement should be a good omen for their future plans.
