| Can you piggy-back a wireless router onto regular network router? |
|
Have to maintain some computers for public use on a small network. Sometimes people come in with their own laptops and want wireless. I have to disengage one of the wired public computers and put their machines on the wire to accommodate them, and it's a bit of a nuisance.
I do not want wireless all the time, for reasons I won't go into here. But I would like to be able to accommodate the occasional laptop toting visitor. Can I get a wireless router and just piggy back it onto my regular router for such times as it might be helpful.
I don't want to have to tinker with the existing network. We do not have tech support within a hundred miles, nor does the budget provide the means of paying for any help. Your kind guidance is gratefully appreciated.
Yeah, I am a total Luddite, and blond to boot. Why do you ask? ;)

| 1. A Wireless Access Point is probably your answer |
|
They're easy to setup and can even operate with PoE (Power over Ethernet), which means they don't require a power source. I recently setup the Cisco 4410 WAP, and it's worked fantastically. http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-WAP4410N-Wireless-N-Access-Point/dp/B001IYCMNA

| 2. Can it be taken offline and put on as needed? |
|
Don't need wireless often, just once in a while. Prefer something I can just pop out of the desk drawer and put into the regular router when needed. Months go by with no need for wireless.

You can disconnect it from the router so that it has no network or internet connectivity, and only plug it in when needed.
