External HD failure

I've got a verbatim and ultra travel drive that are no longer recognized by the usb ports.

Can somebody point me in the right direction to a possible fix?

I would really appreciate it.

The DU commmunity is pretty generous in other areas when i have questions. Please, folks, if you're an expert in this I would appreciate it!

1. If you have tried

plugging it into a few different computers with the same result, my first call would be the electronics in the portable drive case are shot.

Personally, I've had 3 different portables go bad and in each case it was possible to remove the drive and put it into a machine.

If it doesn't work on other machines, next step is to remove the drive and try it in another computer. Or you could put it into another 2.5" external housing.

I went to radio shack to try a new usb, which is what the verbatim phone tech suggested. turns out the store manager fixes computers on the side and his comments correlate EXACTLY with your information. He seemed much more familiar, experienced and more capable than I, and I didn't want to learn how to do this on my stuff.

Your response gave me the knowledge to put it in this guys hands. I really appreciate your help!
