I've acquired a Mobile Pentium 4 (socket 478) that purportedly runs at 3.06 GHz (23 x ) with a 533 MHz FSB when installed in a laptop, and tried installing it in a Dell Precision 360 minitower (originally 2.26 GHz -- FSB 533 MHz, i875p chipset). There, it only runs at 1.60 GHz (12 x , evidently the default for Mobile Pentia). I've tried to Google the overclocking forums to find a solution. It can't be fixed through the Setup utility (Power Management currently set to S3), and I tried a posted fix that involved shorting two pins on the CPU (machine wouldn't boot). There have been suggestions that SpeedStep in a Mobile can only be coaxed to run at normal speed if you have the right MB, or if you mod the board itself -- not something I'm eager to try, and replacing the board is too drastic a solution for now. There is an adapter from ASUS for Mobile CPU's on desktops, but only for certain ASUS boards. Replace the BIOS? What with? Any other ideas?

there does seem to be a hardware fix, **IF** you have the right mobo.
