I can't "see" files that were transfered from Mac.

Hi: A client of mine went to france....copied her pictures from her camera to a (French friend's) mac computer.
Her French friend then copied the Jpeg's to a flash drive.

She came home and gave the flash drive to me to put on her Windows computer.
All that windows shows is all the files (jpegs) are 4 K but nothing else.

I mean, the icons for the files are there but won't open. (which I figured wouldn't open when I saw the file size)

Anyway, I guess the files are lost from poor transfer or something her friend did not do...

My question is ...What did her friend do that was wrong??

1. My guess

The flash drive not removed properly ie. just pulled out of usb slot.

4. Yep... apparently that's what her friend did. I pretty much figured ..

...that they saw the Icons and said: "O boy, they're done"

I was hoping you would say: "No problem, BlueJazz..Mac has a strange way of transferring jpegs...just
click your heels together, turn around 3 times and get this program "%$^$#" and all your/her problems
will be solved. :) :)
(I could sure use that Beer that we were gonna' drink)

8. I've seen in the past

people using copy/paste to move images and it sometimes results in only the icon being copied. From your post below, if there is no data showing in the hex editor, you may be hosed. Are the images still on the original Mac? Can you get a CD?

FYI, I always use a dedicated copy utility - TerraCopy. It verifies the files and tells you if anything failed. That coupled with 'Copy to folder' and 'move to folder' added to right click menu saves a lot of headaches and only takes a second or two longer.

We will have that beer one day (or a noice fruity shiraz) and have a yarn about computer disasters! :hi:

2. How is the flash drive formatted?

Working between Windows, Macs and Linux computers, I've found that only FAT32 provides true interoperability, albeit along with all the other disadvantages of FAT32.

3. I just checked...it Fat32. I would guess that her friend saw the icons and...

..assumed the transfer was complete.

I'll call her up and say "No Eiffel tower for you!!.. come back 1 year!" :) :)

I'll be kind but I always hate to tell people that the only memories they'll have regarding
their trip will be in their head. :(

6. She's probably SOL but if you access to a Mac

you might see if that can read it. I wouldn't give up (or write anything to that drive) yet.

5. Possibility that your computer won't/can't read jpegs

I've seen that problem before. Some photo setups want .jpg not .jpeg.
Download and install IrfanView
http://www.irfanview.com/
and see if it will read them

7. In the last 1/2 hour I put a few of the files into a Hex Editor. All that's..

..in each file is part of the header and then lots of Zeros.
(yes..I tried everything from Photoshop to Irfanview to avs programs.) :)
