WTF happened to my hosts file?

So I happened to be checking my "hosts" file to make sure the ad sites were being rerouted to 127.0.0.1. I have been seeing ads that normally were blocked, you see.

Anyway, this is what it looked like.

This goes on for a total of 214,628 characters, or about 48 pages. Looks like Korean characters.


I recovered my "hosts" file from a recent backup. But, still... any ideas?

1. Wow.. don't know what to say about that.

but might suggest is you make your file "read-only".

I didn't like doing it at first because I was really tweaking it a lot a while back, but lately I only touch mine maybe once a month.

3. It was when I found it to try to change it back!

Most mysterious. I had that option checked off in "Spybot S&D", to protect it. I unchecked it in Windows Explorer to save it after I fixed it.

2. Smells like Malware, IMO

Scan with MBAM http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html & your Anti Virus. Let us know if/what they find.

4. I'll run a complete virus scan overnight. I have Norton.

I also have Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware. Spybot runs daily, but I haven't run Ad-Aware in a while. Do you think I need this "MBAM" too?

5. If it is Malware....

...and that's a big if...and your Norton, Spybot and/or Adaware hasven't "caught" it, then yes Malwarebytes AntiMalware (MBAM) is most definitely needed. It's fast, free & most importantly one of the most effective Malware detection & removal tools out there presently, IMO. Many other DUers will no doubt concur.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of any of the 3 progs you mentioned, but to each his own.:)

How do you maintain your Hosts file? I use HostsMan to update & optimize my hosts file. I use MVPs hosts along with other ad-blocking & Malware Domain blocking hosts which HostsMan can update with three mouse clicks when needed.

6. Well, I water my hosts file every other day and fertilize once a week.

I've positioned it so it's in direct sunlight a couple of hours a day but not more than that to avoid sunburn.

Spybot adds known bad domain names to the list whenever I update it; I've added a few dozen by hand to try to cut down on the ads I see on the InterTubez. Past that... :shrug:
