Something changed my dwm.exe file... |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-06-11 02:33 PM by Phentex
Please speak to me like I'm four. Here's all I know...
Everything worked fine. The next day upon start-up there was a warning message saying crss.exe file (? or something like it) and dwm.exe were harmful and should be deleted. I googled first and discovered those are actual files the computer may need so I did not delete them. I found the dwm.exe file listed in my documents and settings folder and the properties said it had been modified the day before. I also found something called 7096.ASM which I don't recognize and was supposedly created that day.
I have had only one issue and that's with a medical billing software. I am not able to see certain documents any longer. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it didn't help.
So I think I have corrupted the dwm file somehow. Google says there are programs that can "fix" it but I'm not sure about doing that.
Do I have a real virus or something? Do you know what the ASE file is?
Thanks for any advice. Everything else works fine. I ran malwarebytes but it says it cannot delete the files and it doesn't find anything harmful.

1. csrss.exeis a trojan. dwm.exe is a virus.UNLESS they are in the Windows/system32 folder. |
|
Do you have adequate anti-virus protection?
Have you updated malwarebytes?

2. Thank you for taking the time... |

to respond. I know it probably seems so basic to most people.
I updated (I have a paid version of MB) and it then found 8 infected files! Took care of them and now I can see the documents again.
THANK YOU!!!

3. Thank you. Even experts need help with certain things regarding computers. |

I have breakfast regularly with 3 other working Techs. Seems like every day (when we talk about computer stuff) I catch myself thinking "Damn, I didn't know that" :) :)

The free version of MalwareBytes AntiMalware has bailed me out once when my system got infected and once when I bought a laptop off ebay that was infected on arrival. I no longer even bother to use anything else on top of Windows XP SP3 and thunderbird/firefox.
For awhile I was using free ZoneAlarm, but they keep messing it up when they release a new version, so eventually I gave up on it and it hasn't seemed to make any difference.
