My computer tech renamed the "D" dr ive "G" drive and now |
|
None of the programs that worked on "D" drive can be accessed or used.
My husband says we can just switch the "G" drive back to its old name of "D" drive, but I would appreciate knowing if that is okay to do and any advice on how to do it.
The machine is Windows XP.
The tech did a great job of reco0vering everything we needed after we had a "fatal error" Hard drive crash mid-July. And he only charged us $ 142.50.
But it would be nice to get our software programs back.
Any advice or help appreciated.

Administrative Tools >Computer Management.
First, Right click the Start button, select: properties > customize > display administrative tools. Note, they may already be accessible, this is in case they are not.
Now Administrative Tools should show up in your programs menu. Select Admin Tools > Computer Management and a window will open. In the left hand pane of this window, click on Storage > Disk Management. Give it a second or two to bring up the state of your drives.
Now you can Right click on either the Bar chart or the list of drives and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths'. You may need to temporarily change the drives to M & N or something not being used before you re-assign final drive letters.
On edit: DUH!!! You can open Admin tools directly from control panel.

2. Thank you so much canetoad - and don't feel too abd abt |

The "Duh" moment - it is getting to be the wee hours of the morning.
Now another question - do I have to worry that when doing this, I will end up with everything being converted to "read only" - this is something that occurred after the tech worked on the computer. i had to take the machine back so I could transfer files onto DVD's - his computer repair had somehow made everything "read only."

3. There's absolutely no reason it should truedelphi |

This is the correct way to change drive letters and it will restore the paths to files that the computer is not seeing at the moment.
If the files are not read only before, they will not be changed.
